Closing on a new home is one of if not the most exciting moments of anyone’s life. It’s during this time that you get those new keys and are ready to start a new chapter of your life.

But as a new homeowner you will most likely have a million things racing through your mind on things to do and needs to improve before you actually move in. But, there are also things you shouldn’t do. Here are a few:

  • Don’t overspend. You will be eager to whip out your credit card and start enhancing your new place with new furniture and décor. While it can be so tempting and some of it may be justified, give yourself a post-closing budget and know you don’t have to get everything all at once as the last thing you want to be is house-poor.
  • Don’t neglect your neighbors. You’re the new family on the block and now have new neighbors. Don’t be shy, introduce yourselves as you will now be seeing them a very lot in the future. Showing your neighbors that you are approachable is a great way to get acquainted with the neighborhood and its culture.
  • Watch out for current trends. While something maybe very trendy now, it may not in a few years. While having the newest styles can be exciting you don’t want to be stuck with something that shortly may become very unattractive or potentially hurt resale value. Instead, your home should reflect you and your families wants and needs and not necessarily on what is currently in.
