Closing on a home is one of the most exciting times of a person’s life. For many they officially accomplish the “American Dream”.
But besides popping the champagne there are a couple things you want to take care of right away! Here’s a brief checklist:
Change All Your Locks
You never know who else besides the previous owners have keys to the home. You also don’t know how many extra spare keys of the home, the previous owner had. The last thing you need is theft on your new property. That’s why you should purchase and install new locks yourself or hire a locksmith to change them. In addition, make sure to change any codes on keypads you have including the garage door.
Service All Your HVAC Units
While an inspector probably gave you a report on the health of your HVAC units, it’s probably a good idea to get your unit cleaned and serviced to make sure the systems are running as efficiently as possible. There is a good chance the previous owner probably did neglect it as they knew they weren’t going to be living there much longer.
Test All The Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors
Never assume that your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are working properly. Just because you see them on the walls of the home doesn’t mean they are working. Your family’s health and safety are more important than anything and detectors that have old batteries in them can cause a lot of potential big issues.
Put All Your Closing Documents In A Safe Place
This type of paperwork is important and shouldn’t be accidentally tossed in your recycling bin or trash. Putting them in a safe, secure drawer or safe is ideal as you will want and need these documents in the future for a variety of different reasons.
