Purchasing a new home is an incredible accomplishment for people of all ages, whether it be a first-time homeowner or a person who owns multiple homes.

For many though that purchase in South Florida, they are snowbirds and travel up north half the year. For others that it’s their only home, you still may be taking summer vacations.

South Florida has tricky weather, especially over the summer and during hurricane season. That means you need to take care of your new investment, even if you aren’t physically there.

So, what are a few things you should do before you leave to protect your new piece of real estate? Here are a few tips:

Remotely monitor your thermostat. You can do this by installing a remote thermostat control that allows you to check the temperature and humidity levels remotely via a mobile app. The last thing you want to have to deal with when you return is mold and mildew.

Change you’re A/C filter before you leave as a dirty filter caused by humidity can also lead to mold. If you have a non-programmable thermostat, set your A/C to run at 80 degrees while you are away. If you live in a condo or apartment, set your A/C at 77 degrees. You’ll also want to open your closet and cabinet doors, just to keep fresh air moving in and out of those areas.

Turn off your cable boxes and disconnect your water heater from the circuit breaker. Also unplug large and small appliances such as toasters, dishwashers, and washing machines. This will help prevent any fires or floods.

Purchasing a home is a big investment no matter who you are. If though you travel over the summer you want to make sure you return to the home, the same way you left it.
