Purchasing a new home is a very exciting time for you and your family. It’s the start of something new. It is also the time for most to say goodbye to their old residences – whether that be an apartment, condo, townhome or single-family home.

No matter what you are moving out of, you should create a checklist of things to do before the day when you hand the keys over. This will help keep the stress level down and everything organized. Here are some suggestions:

  • Research moving companies. A good place to start is by asking friends and family but you can also look at the Better Business Bureau website and get some advice from there. It’s good to get at least 3 estimates. When doing that ask about insurance and insurance coverage as the last thing you want is to open up items in boxes that are broken.

  • If you are moving into a completely new area you will want to start researching banks, doctors and schools as your current ones probably won’t work for you anymore once you move.

  • Make a list of the businesses you will need to contact to provide your new address to, including online accounts and credit card companies.

  • Start the packing process as soon as possible so you have time to assess what you want to keep and what you are getting rid of and/or donating. Remember, you will most likely be getting a lot of new house-warming gifts once you get settled in your new home from friends and loved ones.

  • Use up the food and drinks in your refrigerator, freezer and pantry as you most likely won’t want to or be able to transfer it.

  • Visit a local office or home supplies store to get boxes, packing material, markers, tape, labels and box cutters. This way you have everything you need to make the transition as organized and safe as possible.

There are for sure additional things and items that need to be done when it comes to moving out of your home. These are just some of the essentials. We at Alliant Title and Escrow can assist with other ideas and recommendations.

Good luck with the move and start getting excited about your new home.
